Big Print: Wood Carving

A special wood carving demonstration will take place on July 1, 10am–4pm, at the Steveston HUB (Nikka Building).

The carvings will be used in a unique printmaking event coming up on Labour Day weekend: September 3–4, 11am–4pm. Select artists, volunteers, and the public will use large-scale woodblocks to create prints using a full-sized steamroller as a press.

Six artists from the Musqueam and Japanese communities will ink and print their 4 ft x 8 ft woodblocks. Outside the sanctity of the studio, a traditional venue for creating print art, Big Print Steveston will “take it to the streets,” dramatizing the magic of relief printing, the carved blocks, the print process, and the final reveal.

The event is produced by Creative Cultural Collaborations Society in conjunction with the City of Richmond and Malaspina Printmakers Society.
